Although Austin resides in the conservative state of Texas, it has become the hub of culture and diversity for the state. It even ranked third in population percentage of LGBT communities in the top 50 ranked U.S. cities, according to a 2015 study conducted by Gallup, where 5.3% of the adult population polled in Austin identifies as LGBT. The Austin LGBT Chamber of Commerce, created back in 1997, has helped to create diverse local communities of small businesses, corporate and even nonprofits who share a core value of promoting equality and diversity in the workplace. For 30 years the city has hosted The Austin Pride Celebration and The Austin Gay & Lesbian International Film Festival in order to help educate the community about LGBTQ issues across a myriad of topics ranging from race, immigration status, class, gender identity and expression and religion.

In addition to being a safe haven for the LGBTQ community, Austin is also ranked as having a low cost of living and prosperous employment. According to RentCafe, Austin's neighborhood rent averages vary from $1,105 for a 805 square feet apartment in the North Lamar neighborhood to $2,668 for a 968 square feet apartment in downtown Austin (the most popular and sought after area to live in Austin). You'll see a significant price drop, but still be in close proximity to downtown if you check out the South Congress (SoCo) neighborhood, with rent averages for an 818 square feet apartment at $1,476. If you're wondering what the most gay friendly neighborhoods in Austin are, most residents will respond, "The whole city is gay friendly!"
