What comes to mind when you think of Philadelphia, PA? The Liberty Bell? Cheesesteaks? The award winning movie "Rocky"? How about the 6th friendliest LGBTQ city in the United States, according to an independent report done by NerdWallet. Nearly 4% of adults that were polled for this study identified as lesbian, gay, bisexul or transexual. The city also has a designated "Gayborhood", which has been the center of Phily's gay culture since World War II, the nickname however was coined during an October Outfest event in 1995. In 2007 the city's then Mayor, John Street, dedicated 36 street signs to symbolize the city's commitment to diversity, with rainbow flags permanently attached to the street signs. The neighborhood between 11th and Broad streets and Pine and Chestnut streets are adorned with these rainbow street signs and is the designated "Gayborhood". But that's not to say that the rest of the city isn't LGBTQ friendly. Philadelphia is the first city in the United States to have launched a tourism marketing campaign aimed at welcoming the LBGTQ community with a slogan that read, "Get Your History Straight and Your Nightlife Gay". Philadelphia wouldn't be an LGBTQ friendly city without an annual Pride event, Philly Pride Presents, is the non profit group that helps organize Pridefest and OutFest each year, which have both been going strong since the late 1980's. Philly's OutFest is the largest National Coming Out Day event in the world, which attracts nearly 40,000 participants each year. If all that wasn't enough, In 2010 and 2011 Newsweek ranked the University of Pennsylvania as the top gay friendly school in the nation.
